Rider Profile: Kinetic Fitness Coaching Elite Masters’ Racer Houston Peterson

This post is the 1st in a series where I will have the racers on my masters and 1/2’s team answer some questions to help everyone learn some things about them. I’ll start off the series with the information provided to me by perineal power house Houston Peterson.

Rider profile

Name: Houston Peterson
Age: 52
Occupation: Investment and Loan Portfolio manager Years riding: 30
Years racing: 24

Greatest racing success: 3 fold : Playing a key role in helping a teammate win Cone-Azalia Road Race against very stiff competition, and a race he really wanted to win. Also playing a key role in helping another teammate win a road race for the 5th time in a row against very stiff competition and against incredible odds. Personal result worth mentioning was winning the 35+ Crit and the 45+ crit at Le tour de Mont Pleasant in the same day, both of which were field sprints. Then winning the 35+ Road Race the next morning after initiating and powering a two up Break away for 25 miles.

The one that got away: West Branch Road Race 2014. The plan was to breakaway 1k from the start and stay away on the windy and hilly course. After going up the road to one rider 1 mile into the 66 mile race, 2 more riders quickly bridged up to form a 4 up breakaway. We dropped 1 rider each 20 miles until 1 strong man from the field bridged up to myself and my one remaining breakaway companion. The new addition and I dropped the old breakaway companion and I thought I would win the race for 65 miles until the last kilometer and 300ft climb when the other rider proved to be stronger up the climb to the finish line. It was a race I really loved and because of the climbing, I was never expected to do well as a sprinter, which provided extra motivation to prove I could fill a role of a strong man. My team mates looked at me with the funniest look after the race because we were talking the night before about the plan and my plan was somewhat of a joke as going so early would be just crazy and a suicide mission. Although I did not win, it was a phenomenal performance and one of those days where everything physically was just clicking.

Indoor training tips: Use uplifting Music in a play list and the buddy system. More over if you have snow go snow shoeing as it taxes the legs and low back in a similar way to rolling a big gear and allows you to enjoy the winter wonderland. Dress with wool or water proofing on the back side but light everywhere else.

Why are you excited to race with Kinetic Fitness Coaching Elite Masters this year?: The Business behind the team is a great business which is dear to my heart as a former Physical Educator and Health teacher. A Business which helps people with their fitness and performance goals. The business is headed up by the leader of this team and he is a man with a fantastic heart who just loves seeing people succeed. He is a true winner and very humble. A few years ago he won 11 races in a single season. Many racers will race their whole life and never win a single race. Any racer knows that is incredible yet he remained very humble. Additionally, the riders on this team are first class gentleman and are incredible bike racers.

2017 goal(s): #1 goal is to help a multiyear state champion time trial rider win a mass start race for the first time. #2 goal is to help execute a lead out train that produces wins multiple times.

#3 produce 1 out of state personal victory and win the State Road Race Championship for a 3rd time.

Anything else you want to add:
A big Thank you for the invitation to ride with such a fine group of Gentleman.
